I’ve been a commercial photographer and woodworker most of my life having a passion for both.
The approach I take when turning a bowl/vessel is to let the piece dictate the outcome, very much the way I approach my photography. I start with a vision and establish the resources I need to complete the task. As I turn a bowl or capture images I follow what I see, letting the scene before me reveal an outcome. When I’m turning a bowl on the lathe I let the wood/ resin determine the shape of the vessel. There is always a surprise in what is revealed. When capturing imagery I use the same technique, letting the scene before me help me envision what the possibilities are. I then gather the images I need to build the final piece.
