Jill Martin
Jill identifies Goya as having been an influence in her work. Goya spoke of his aesthetic as having a “terrible beauty.” He looked for a deeper sense of beauty below the surface of things. Contemporary artists Gregory Gillespie and Julie Heffernan, both of whom looked beyond appearances, also, in-spire her work. In addition to this subtext, Jill takes pleasure in the color layering and texture of a piece.
After receiving her M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Jill taught drawing there for two years. Since graduating in 2000, she has been in many national and international art shows , both juried and invitational. Travels in Europe have also informed her painting. Originally from the East Coast, Jill has lived in Los Angeles, British Columbia, and now resides in Phoenix, Arizona as a freelance artist.
